Yesterday I had a [personal profile] sunsetmog and some pie. It was glorious. We watched My Chem and Panic and the Divine Comedy, and I was reminded of how much I actually love Neil Hannon and his clever little songs and his beautiful voice. And that tattooing 'tonight we fly' somewhere on my body would be a wonderful idea.

In other news, I have sold four stories in exchange of donations to help_haiti, totalling at $220. This makes me feel most virtuous, especially as I cannot afford to make any donations myself. Stories offered include:

Remus/Sirius. I haven't written this in many, many years, but I am having Thoughts about how it might go. I discovered Harry Potter at the same time as the Divine Comedy, which makes this evening's Neil Hannon love-fest most inspirational.

Regency MCR. Still have no idea about what to do with this, since I already have two separate Lord Ways in my head and am not sure how to manage a third. Something will come up, no doubt.

Regency Adam/Kris. I have a universe and sort of a plot for this, but the problem is that this Kris is kind of an entitled idiot and the story will suffer if I end up despising the POV character (see all my fic including Harry Potter). As I told [personal profile] sunsetmog, happy, well-adjusted people annoy me.

Sherlock Holmes 2009, Mary/Irene. This is also somewhat developed in my brain, as it consists mostly of ladies being awesome and boys being stupid. Expect much mockery of Victorian gentlemen.

After a conversation on [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore's journal, I started thinking about what makes somebody a good pleasure slave for fictional purposes? What kind of character traits would be useful in making scenarios with pleasures slaves more thrilling? How would, say, the petulant sulkiness of Ryan Ross compare with the petulant sulkiness of Rodney McKay? How about the respective energeticnesses of Brendon Urie and Captain Jack Harkness? Hence, a poll.

Note: Female characters are purposefully excluded from this poll, because I find the concept of female pleasure slaves considerably more disturbing and problematic. Feel free to judge me on that, but it's a thing I have.

1. I went to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! cut for spoilers )

2. I have a job interview in two weeks. \o/ I'm still kind of astonished that anyone is contemplating giving me a job (what on earth are they thinking about, honestly!) but still, the idea of not starving is quite appealing. I might even find somewhere to live when I need to move out of current flat in six weeks. That said, I have become a job applications fiend in the past few weeks - the people at the career's centre said my cover letters were perfect. Something to be proud of, at least.

3. Speaking of being smug, I have been to the gym 50 times between January and June. I have actual muscles now, and you can see them an everything. Mostly this is because I pay a yearly fee of £100, and so the more I go, the cheaper it gets, but there is also a strong undercurrent of being really vain. *g* I might be unemployed and unemployable, but at least I'm really really fit. :)

4. I'm going to see Amanda Fucking Palmer in London on September 12th with [personal profile] emeraldgreen and possibly [personal profile] flesh, and it's going to be awesome. Anybody else got tickets for that? I'm thinking pooling our wine resources (and possibly bringing some for Amanda, I understand she likes that).

5. Thank you so much to everyone who commented on the love thread - it made my week so much better and you guys are wonderful.

6. I've got a post a-brewing on fandom participation and My Deep Thoughts on the state of several fandoms, but it might be a while till I post it, as my hands are acting up. All those job applications, *smites them*

Anyway, how is all of you?

Remus/Sirius Love Post.

Remember back in the day when nobody was dead or straight? (quoted from the post)

I remember when I used to write stuff, a lot of stuff, and some of it was even pretty good. Those were good times. *sighs*

Time for a renaissance, eh?

I was wondering, as you do, about People Outside Fandom (whom I know exist, but try to avoid), and their perception of fannish devotion. Or actually, I noticed my old Gary Oldman poster of "Have you seen this wizard?", and started thinking about whether, for people outside fannish circles, that would be more embarrassing than the poster of Gerard Way which I currently have on my wall. Note that I personally have no shame about either of them.

But considering that Harry Potter is a children's book, and that My Chem is seen as an emo band for silly teenage girls, which would be more embarrassing to find on the wall of a 29-year-old woman? How would our culture read the fact that I've had such posters - what would it say about me to those who are outside the fannish subculture?

Yes, I'm trying to avoid doing my thesis, how did you guess? ;)

Last weekend there was a rubbish article in the Guardian about love stories, and I thought about making a whole post pointing out why it was rubbish - the use of classical references while excluding the homosexual aspects of the original (both in Catullus and Plato), the privileging of male-centered stories (he loved an adulterous hussy but finally got rid of the bitch), the exclusion of any non-heteronormative fiction - but frankly, I can't be bothered. A rubbish article does not deserve that much attention. So, this will be a different post.

I also thought about making a post about why heteronormativity is Bad, Bad, and Wrong. It would be appropriate for the day (I am also wearing my "HETERONORMATIVITY MAKES US ALL QUEER" t-shirt to work today). But again, it would be paying too much attention to an unworthy subject, and I'm pretty sure I'd be preaching to the choir anyway, and so.

Instead, I'm going to show resistance to heteronormativity in action. I'm going to talk about love stories that don't begin with a sexist premise, that aren't built around unequal relationships, where the narrative imperative does not require gendered roles.

In other words, here are some gayporn recs. *g*

A Farm In Iowa By [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon

SGA, John/Rodney. Long, with many, many delightful sequels.

Summary: John inherits a farm, Rodney ends up entirely out of his element, and there is much ado about baseball.

When I think of well-written, compelling, and effective love stories, this is the first one that comes to mind. "Moving" is perhaps the best word for it, because this is the first story I ever read in SGA - this is the reason I care about Rodney McKay and John Sheppard, and I defy all of you to read this fic and not feel the same. This story shows the experience of falling in love, the discomfort and the longing and the familiarity, and the everyday things and the wonder - it shows how people can connect. Sounds trite, but I can promise that there is nothing cliched or unoriginal about this fic. Read it - it will make your life better.

Lust Over Pendle by [livejournal.com profile] ajhall

HP, Draco/Neville. Long with many sequels.

Established relationship at its best - you don't see how these two fall in love, but you do get to see how they manage to stay in love, and the moments of sweetness and strength and drama that follow. This story convinced me that Draco and Neville are, in fact, the most fascinating pairing in HP (seriously, come and ask me about it, I can defend it to the death). It is also storytelling at its best - witty narrative voice, superb original characters, a rich world for them to inhabit, and a most exhilarating plot. Entertainment and wisdom and a most compelling narrative of love - what more could you ask for?

3 Lovers by [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza

SGA, Teyla/Rodney, Teyla/John, Teyla/Ronon, Rodney/John, Teyla/Ronon/Rodney/John. Long.

What I love most about this is the way it subtly criticises sexist assumptions about sexuality. The cultural differences between the Pegasus people and the Earth people are fascinating, and Teyla's voice (her POV) is wonderful. Although there are many pairings in this (enough to satisfy the most fervent of OTP-shippers, even), it's mostly about team-love, and how that need not be separated from sexual love, but need not be inextricably connected to it either. A very satifying and hopeful read.

Nightswimming by [livejournal.com profile] waxjism

Bandom, Frank/Gerard, 142000 words.

If you're in bandom you will have heard of this fic - there was squealing to be heard all over the world when [livejournal.com profile] waxjism posted this a few days ago. This is teenage love, with desperate panting and constant longing and People Who Just Don't Understand, but there is also courage and friendship and the refusal to give up in the face of almost unsurmountable problems. Realistic characters, with all too realistic flaws, and the resulting frustrations are narrated in a most convincing way. Also, there is lots of character-driven hot sex. *g*

Visiting Hours by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock

Smallville, Clark/Lex, Conner/OC. Long.

This is a sequel to Conflicts of Interest, where Conner Luthor discovers that Clark Kent is his mother (hilarious fic, you should read that too). It's about being a teenager, and falling in love awkwardly, and staying in love with your best friend since forever because you can't not, and coming out. Like all of her writing, this story is witty and charming and moving, with inpeccably compelling characters (both the OCs and the familiar ones). Most warmly recommended.

Now, this last story I haven't had time to fall in love with seeing as I only read it this morning, so I will be brief.

Buy Handmade by [livejournal.com profile] jjtaylor

Frank/Gerard, long.

Summary: He knows something else is going to happen; his life isn't always going to be this. He just doesn't know what has to happen for that change to come, for him to wake up and become an artist with an Etsy page and a home studio, and to never have to see a cubicle again.

It's about finding meaning in your everyday life, and finding people you can have meanigful connections with. And how art makes life joyful (and also about how adorable is Gerard Way, but that's most of My Chem fic). Heartwarming and delightful and NEW - so go read this, people. ;)

Now, if anybody wants to tell me what their favourite (most compelling, most moving, most delightful) love stories are, any recs would be greatly welcomed. *g*
wildestranger: (potterpuffs/draco/what)
Um, so it appears that my paid account doesn't finish until the 12th. A few more days of exciting pictures! I might even do a picspam about Why Patrick Stump Is A Beautiful Man and You Should All Adore Him.

However, first, a poll. *g*

A discussion on [livejournal.com profile] fleshdress's IJ made me start thinking about Next Generation HP pairings. Teddy/James is, of course, vastly interesting, as is Albus/Scorpius, but there are other possibilities. James/Scorpius? Closer to the Harry/Draco of that generation. And, naturally, some crossgen pairings, which made me think about Teddy/Draco. How that would be possible, what would interest them in each other, what kind of a situation would make that pairing work.

And I thought about this a lot, five pages of notes sort of lot, and now I have an epic plot and fully-blown characterisation and a perfect opening scene. With much angst-filled pining and curiosity and awkwardness. Sadly, my term of epic is no misnomer, as it wants to be at least 15000 words long. Argh. *sporks brain*

So, if I were to write such a thing, would you read it? ;)

Corridors of Power by [livejournal.com profile] blythely

If you like Harry/Draco, if you read the pairing at all, you'll want to read this. If you don't read Harry/Draco, and don't really see why that pairing might be interesting, you should read this. Because this? Is more or less the best there is. A long, plotty fic, with impeccably witty and fascinating style, great minor characters (say, Blaise Zabini at his most delightful), and a very original premise. There is humour, there is banter and great dialogue, there is world-building and character-building, there is long and tantalising sexual tension, there is hot hot sex. There is wizarding politics. And there are Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, original and recognisable, and much more fun than pretty much anywhere else.

This is something very much worth reading.
wildestranger: (copperbadge/snape/happyface)
I is back. I is never travelling again. Or drinking alcohol. Bleugh.

No, really. ;)

There are so many posts I need to make, so I figured a list would be good - to remind me of my obligations, as well as to give you things to expect (yes, I'm sure you are all panting at the edge of your seats).

1. Account of Wilde's Adventures in Sectus, Mostly Consisting of Much Rose Wine and Evil Cackling

2. My Thoughts on the Book. Which, in a short form, are: Yay!

3. My Meta-like Thoughts on the Book, About That One Thing That I Have Mentioned Before. This will require some careful constructing and polishing, as I wish to be very precise.

4. Draco/Neville porn. Because one should, and I've already started writing it. Woop.

5. Last part of Adventures in High Life. One day. Probably soon.

6. Pimping post for Torchwood, which I promised ages ago, before I got distracted by HP.

7. Pimping post for SGA porn, which I threatebed to write promised months and months ago, since everyone should appreciate Rodney-porn.

And probably some navel-gazing about how I haven't been that interested in HP in a long time, but now with the new book I am again, and have started to crave good characted based porn fic, and have started to want to write it again.

I have also been persuaded to play Draco Malfoy at [livejournal.com profile] vox_lacuna. I blame [livejournal.com profile] pre_raphaelite1 for this, since she plied me with drinks and threatened me with her paddle, and promised I could have my very own riding crop. So if you're looking for a new RPG game, and fancy interacting with my Draco (Draco is very much up for interacting. He is a bit slutty that way.), have a look at [livejournal.com profile] vox_lacuna. :)
