wildestranger: (gerard way bwah/mcee)
1. Gerard.

Now, the thing to keep in mind is that Gerard Way makes me happy on a daily basis just by existing. At the moment, however, he is making me particularly happy with this, My Chemical Romance's video for Desolation Row, which one astute commentator described as Gerard's bondage fantasy porno that he decided to share with us.

This is why we love Gerard. He shares such things with us. And his fantasy includes Frank blowing raspberries and writhing on the floor, Ray beating people up with his guitar, Mikey being pushed about by police officers, a naked dudebro who starts a riot because the My Chem tickets are sold out (in [livejournal.com profile] bexless's words), and Gerard strutting about and being incredibly pretty. This video offers an endless of plethora of delights, and you should go see it. That's how Gerard Way will save your life.

2. Disloyal Water Buffaloes.

I haven't really spoken about Fall Out Boy's Folie A Deux, but that's because I have been too overcome with delight rather than because I had nothing to say. This song exemplifies why. Hilarious and pop-culture referencing title, anthemic and joyful rock music, and Patrick Motherfucking Stump. This is what makes me want to get out of bed in the morning. And to belt out Boycott Love! at random people.

3. Ryan Ross/Flowery scarves

It's kind of sad how immensely hilarious I find Ryan Ross's wardrobe choices. Both in potentia and in reality - there's a real danger that Ryan/Entertaining Items of Clothing will surpass all other pairings in Brendolina and take over the plot, but I can't seem to help myself. *is warped in the brain*

4. Original Slavefic.

This is a wip slavefic with original characters - the premise might seem a bit cliched to begin with but it is so much better than that. I am utterly fascinated by the dynamics between the two characters and have spent a lot of time pondering how things might progress. There is interesting world-building and depiction of cultural clashes and a compelling plot, but at the centre of it all is this amazing UST, which is complicated by so many things that I can't actually think of a way that it might be resolved (but I'm having fun trying). I can't remember the last time I read a romance plot where the ending wasn't obvious, and this is what makes the story so enjoyable. Much recommended.

In other news, I posted the second chapter of Brendolina this weekend in case anybody missed it.

I was planning to do a long post about race discourse and politics and academia, and about how happy I am for America today (I am so, so happy for you guys, and happy to see you all so happy), but then this happened, and what I have instead is Regency porn.

A Marriage of Convenience by [livejournal.com profile] jae_w. NC-17, 40000 words. It's Jon/Tom, a pairing that I don't read much usually but in this case I have to recommend it. The story is long and gorgeous, and has some fascinating world building, both in terms of Regency stylistics but also bandom tropes, how we see the relationships between various people and what we expect to find in them. Most importantly, it's a really well-written, tantalising romance. You'll want to read it. Go on. *nudges*

OMG [livejournal.com profile] meretricula wrote me Granby/Tharkay for a Yuletide NYR fic! It is here and it is glorious! Go read it!
wildestranger: (books fond/skellorg)
I've spent this weekend unable to step away from the computer because of this fic. Well, these three novels really - they're long, but most enjoyable and you don't have to read them all at once (if you have things like will power or a life).

Here's the blurb from the site:

Simon Drake is an up-and-coming young FBI hotshot, an agent with a personal track record so outstanding that it borders on unbelievable. Not yet thirty, he's already the leader of his own special ops team; a ragtag bunch of talented but nigh-uncontrollable lunatics, it's true, but under Simon's inspired leadership they're a force to be reckoned with, a team with an unparalleled success rate, a team with an almost unblemished record--until now.

Jeremy Archer is the brilliant and unpredictable scion of a long line of international art thieves, simultaneously a phenomenally wealthy English socialite and one of the most infamous criminals in the world. At twenty-seven years old he's already wanted on nearly every continent for thefts totalling more than ninety-one million dollars, and yet no one has ever come close to catching him--until now.

Now?

May the best man win.

Here's a story I've been unable to stop thinking about for the past four days.

Shotgun by [livejournal.com profile] ficsoreal. Frank/Gerard, Pete/Patrick, Mikey/Alicia, Ryan/Spencer, Ray/Bob. 20000 words on this the first installment, and there is more to come.

This is a fascinating world. There's a high society with modern (futuristic?) gadgets; arranged marriages and formal courtships, with all the lingering UST and waiting for first time sex that this implies (well, it implies that to me, but then again my mind has been warped by Regency romance), but also cars and computers and mobile phones. Most interestingly, society here isn't based around gender, or any innate (not that I think gender is innate, but that's a topic for another day) quality - both men and women hold power and status, and both men and women can hold the position of the sheltered, protected partner. Also, status is conferred by tattoos, and issues of branding (marking, stamping your tramp *g*) are being debated.

I've read this story four times since I first came across it, and I cannot stop thinking about what might happen next, how these relationships might pan out, how this world works. It's the most compelling fic I've read in a long time, and the most enjoyable. Very much worth a read.

My sleeping issues seem to have sorted themselves somewhat - I am still tired as fuck but at least I can get up in the morning. Yay for mornings. Especially now that they have fixed my shower and I have actual hot water. So much yay for hot showers.

In other news, I have recently purchased two albums of both Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance. I have also purchased some eyeliner, hair gel, and three pairs of skinny jeans. I fear these events are not unrelated. *hangs head in shame* I should be too old for this shit.

Especially since I am not a boy, and therefore wearing eyeliner doesn't quite have the same subversive queer panache. Also, it makes me look like an underaged prostitute, or possibly Avril Lavigne, neither of which is a look I wish to cultivate. Although this might be because I'm just rubbish at putting on make up.

Anyway, I'm far too old to try to look trendy - how can I look down on undergraduates if I can't call them shallow and maintain a superior stance through dress code? - but there is just something about pretty boys in eyeliner that makes me aspirational. Wah.

Okay, enough self-indulgent whining - I draw the line at actually behaving emo. Here's a fic rec, and look ma, it's HP! Apparently I am still reading it. And oh, there should be Adventures this weekend.

A bright particular star by [livejournal.com profile] flambeau Remus/Sirius, NC-17

Their last Christmas at Hogwarts, with a lovely slow pace and a delightfully happy Remus. Not to mention some somewonderfully awkward and warm sex scenes. Go read!

Those of you who like Rodney? This is the way to some wonderful Rodneys.

[livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match!

I suppose I could say something about the fascinating premise of the fest and how great it is that after these last few weeks of Doom and Dread we have porn, but really? There are wonderful Rodneys. And you know, Johns *snickers, because rentboy AUs are never a bad idea*, who apparently are the main characters in today's offerings, but really, Rodney. That's enough for me. *cuddles Rodney*

Also, I'm getting my first SG-1 season 10 dvd tomorrow. Which means Colonel Mitchell and his lemon. And my SGA season 3 dvd is arriving in two weeks. Which means more Rodney.

My grin today could blind the sun. :)

In case you aren't already reading this (and why the hell not? what's wrong with you?) here is a rec.

Scent and Sensuality is an ongoing story about the Harry Potter world after Voldemort has been defeated - transplanted in a Regency Romance world. Sirius has come back from the dead but there is something wrong with him, and Remus suffers stoically, Draco is going mad, and Ginny has become a highwayman. There is much plotty goodness in this- see the community info for the premise. It's written by a different writer each chapter (and in a few months, that will be me), and the latest chapter is by [livejournal.com profile] underlucius. Find here

Since I am now a clever linking thing (i.e. I know how to do links in Livejournal! Whee!), I thought I would recommend My Most Favourite Reading at the moment, which is [livejournal.com profile] hackthis's Trade. It is AU starring Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter, Blaise Zabini, and various other characters from HP and other fandoms. The thing with this is that it isn't about magic (in fact there is none), it isn't about the Boy Who Lived. The characters are created on their own, and whatever you might remember about the Harry Potter books are merely allusions. This story stands on its own.

And it is so good. The emotional involvement here is enormous, the narration is subtle, and surprising, and gorgeous. The best thing I can say about this is that it is the most satisfactory reading I have done in a very long time.

There are eight chapters so far, there will be one more next Tuesday. THis link will take you to the first chapter, other chapters can be found in [livejournal.com profile] hackthis's memories.

Go read!
