Yesterday I had a sunsetmog and some pie. It was glorious. We watched My Chem and Panic and the Divine Comedy, and I was reminded of how much I actually love Neil Hannon and his clever little songs and his beautiful voice. And that tattooing 'tonight we fly' somewhere on my body would be a wonderful idea.

In other news, I have sold four stories in exchange of donations to help_haiti, totalling at $220. This makes me feel most virtuous, especially as I cannot afford to make any donations myself. Stories offered include:

Remus/Sirius. I haven't written this in many, many years, but I am having Thoughts about how it might go. I discovered Harry Potter at the same time as the Divine Comedy, which makes this evening's Neil Hannon love-fest most inspirational.

Regency MCR. Still have no idea about what to do with this, since I already have two separate Lord Ways in my head and am not sure how to manage a third. Something will come up, no doubt.

Regency Adam/Kris. I have a universe and sort of a plot for this, but the problem is that this Kris is kind of an entitled idiot and the story will suffer if I end up despising the POV character (see all my fic including Harry Potter). As I told sunsetmog, happy, well-adjusted people annoy me.

Sherlock Holmes 2009, Mary/Irene. This is also somewhat developed in my brain, as it consists mostly of ladies being awesome and boys being stupid. Expect much mockery of Victorian gentlemen.

I got paid yesterday. \o/

See, I've been working three jobs since September, but until now I've been paid for only one of them. This is how universities and part time jobs work, apparently. *smites them* Anyway, now I have money and its omgsoexciting. Money for rent! Money for food! Money for my water bill and council tax and internet! Money for WINE! (guess which one I'm most excited about? *g*)

This is also the first time in my life that I've earned enough to support myself. Yeah, I turned thirty this year. This what happens when you're a student until 29 with no funding and emerge on the job market just as recession hits. Jobs in my field usually have at least 50 people applying for them, but this year it has been more likely to be 150.

Anyway, now that I've acquired some lovely, lovely money, I have also been buying things. Not just wine. Although obviously that too. Things wot I've bought include:

Adam Lambert's For Your Entertainment. Gerard Way's The Umbrella Academy: Dallas. Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. Dresden Dolls' A is for Accidents. And a sleeveless Nike top for the gym, a new ladies razor (the last one was form 1995, still functional but starting to rot), some beautiful green jewelry from Accessorize, Christmas presents, and three bottles of fancy wine. I am hoping to fill my five-bottle wine rack before I open them.

Also, I've finally been able to put into action my plan to read more scifi by female authors that isn't about manpain. So far I have acquired Justina Robson's Silver Screen, Nicola Griffith's Slow River, Connie Willis's Bellwether, and Tricia Sullivan's Double Vision. I'll do another proper post about them books individually, but the short version is that I really enjoyed the first two, found the third a bit dull, and have yet to read the fourth.

I am on the lookout for more scifi by female authors, preferably with female protagonists, so if you have recs I'd be very interested to hear them! I've been going through the Mindblowing Science Fiction By Women page, but it's a bit confusing. No need to tell me about Lois McMaster Bujold or Ursula LeGuin, them I know and love already. But new writers, especially ones who write LGBT characters, would be very welcome.

And here's a rec for an Adam Lambert fic: the hours and times of your desire by solvent90. It's a slavefic au, with some issues of consent as one might expect form the genre, but it is hot and delightful and enjoyable, so go read!

After a conversation on scribblinlenore's journal, I started thinking about what makes somebody a good pleasure slave for fictional purposes? What kind of character traits would be useful in making scenarios with pleasures slaves more thrilling? How would, say, the petulant sulkiness of Ryan Ross compare with the petulant sulkiness of Rodney McKay? How about the respective energeticnesses of Brendon Urie and Captain Jack Harkness? Hence, a poll.

Note: Female characters are purposefully excluded from this poll, because I find the concept of female pleasure slaves considerably more disturbing and problematic. Feel free to judge me on that, but it's a thing I have.

My Bandom Big Bang is handed in! Quite literally at the last minute - I went and found out what time it was midnight in Hawai'i (11.00 UK time, it turns out), and set my alarm clock accordingly. Not that I won't still be doing extensive rewriting because wow does it suck in its current form, but still.

Now that that is done, I can talk about my Very Exciting Weekend, which included Cobra Starship, lots of squealing over Adam Lambert, some therapeutic watching of Life On the Murder Scene, Star Trek, and three bottles of wine. And sunshine. In the UK, this is a rare event which inspires people to take their clothes off in public and consume large quantities of alocohol whilst turning increasingly red. You'll be pleased to know that emeraldgreen and I were able to participate in this tradition.

1. Cobras at ULU. It was a fun show despite the venue being inexplicably dry - there was plastic over the beer taps, it was a most distressing sight - and the band was very enthusiastic. (We are not going to mention the support bands. Anybody who brings Cash Cash into my journal will get smacked with a glowstick. That fucking song is already in my head.) I also learned to use glowsticks and to make fistpumps with great glee (these two things were not disconnected). Gabe was sporting his usual glasses and hat combo, and I kind of wanted to go and ask him about his Patrick Stump look (and tell him that Patrick looks prettier with it, of course). Amusingly, he said something about wouldn't we rather see Cobra Starship on the charts than some dude from American Idol, which...you know, they've got some fun songs and all, but Adam Lambert is a shiny unicorn prince and your argument is invalid. He's got a huge talent, and I've not seen yours, Mr Saporta, so less with the bitching, please.

2. There was an aftershow at a nearby bar, which was both hilarious and incredibly weird. It's an awkward situation, the fans trying not to stare too much or be too creepy (well, most fans, obviously there are exceptions) and buying drinks for the pleasure of being in the same room as the band, while the band tries too look like they're just out having fun rather than engaging in a PR event. I thought about whether I'd want to go and talk to some of them as they were there and clearly prepared to chat to people, but just the idea of walking up to a complete stranger is sort of mindcurlingly embarrassing, especially considering the Band/Fans hierarchy that was going on. I stood next to VickyT at the bar at one point (she had tequila shots *g*), but that was pretty much it. I thought about asking Gabe what he had against Adam Lambert, but then at the end of the night we saw him and some of the band climb into a taxi with a gaggle of (fake) blonde (look, I'm a natural light-brown dark blonde so I'm allowed to be smug about these things, okay?) fans in skimpy dresses, and I decided that a fan encounter would not be something I'd want to do . It is a strange dynamic that's created in these events, and I'm starting to think that meeting anybody out of these bands (except of course Gerard, who is PERFECT) is not a good idea.

3. On Saturday, emeraldgreen, yan_tan_tether (are you on dreamwidth?) and I went for a picnic in St James's park. It was 24 degress and I wore hotpants for the first time ever, which was pretty exciting. *g* We had cheese and olives and houmous, and talked about pairing Adam Lambert with everybody in bandom. I'm thinking of writing an Adam/Patrick fic (tentatively titled 'till your lungs give out') where they make beautiful music together and Pete is jealous in a number of hilarious ways (think about it, all these years of guyliner and crazy hair and nailpolish, and then Adam Lambert comes along and wins not only the hearts of the nation but also Patrick Stump?).

4. On Sunday, emeraldgreen and I went to see Star Trek, which we decided was deliciously slashy and ( Read more... ) This also means that I am on the lookout for interesting meta posts and above all, porn (Kirk/Spock preferred but other options also considered), so if you have recs please come and share. I am very eager to explore this fandom more deeply.

5. What's up with you guys? I'm mostly caught up on my flist but it's quite possible that I've missed some stuff, so please link me if you/Gerard/Adam did something exciting.

Having just watched the second episode of American Idol on UK tv (How is this my life? Why is watching American Idol the highlight of my week? WHY?), I continue to be amused by a) how drunk Paula Abdul seems at every show (Seriously, she's like a drunken mom at a graduation. "You....were so...great...I loooooove you.") and b) how flirtatious Simon Cowell is with Ryan Seacrest. Not that I ever want to imagine Simon Cowell having sex with anyone, but there is definitely something there. As it were.

And I am so glad about the results. ( cut for spoilers )

Now, tell me something fun about Castiel. *g*

EDIT: Also, I would really like to see Gerard twitter about this. Come on, it's not like writing an album and preparing for the arrival of a new baby is any reason to stop twittering about reality tv? I bet he has thoughts on Adam. Someone should ask him about them. :P

Today I have watched American Idol on ITV2. I blame disarm_d for this. She posted pictures and videos of Adam Lambert and wrote fic about him teaching Brendon Urie how to have good sex. He can sing Led Zeppelin well! I am helplessly enthralled now. I even care about whether he wins or not. Next week there's a good chance I'm going to be all the Americans on my flist to vote, or else.

Anyway, Americal Idol. I have thoughts.

1. Paula Abdul gives me the motts. She looks like she's either drunk or about to cry, and possibly both - kind of in the way your mother is after drinking the night away at your graduation and wanting to tell you how proud she is. Or perhaps that's just me. Um.

2. Simon Cowell is a lot nicer in the US. I remember him in Pop Idol in 2001 and how it was a rare thing for him to say anything pleasant about anyone at all. Now he compliments somebody every week! That might be just Adam though. *g*

3. Danny Gokey looks like a rapy fratboy. This person needs not to win, or I shall be most irate. Look into it, America.

Now, who else should we pair up Adam Lambert with? I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of him with Patrick Stump. Or Pete. Or Gerard. Or a whole Panic sandwich. What think you?
