Year of Fic in Review

xellas:
Total number of fics written since 1 January 2005: 56. I refuse to count how many words that is for fear that it might longer than my thesis.
Favourites of the Batch: A Thing of Dark Imaginings. This was the most enjoyable to write, and I remember many days in the summer, sitting down with my notebook and just writing for a few hours, giddy with delight over how well it was going and how much it was to write. I think this is the one where I really learned to plot, and learned to create the characters through tension and thoughs and the placing of teacups. Also this is the one I was writing when my laptop was stolen and I lost 5000 words, but recovering the story from my notebook was what got me through that crisis.
Best of the Batch: A Satyr Against Reason. I remember this one as very difficult, and feeling horribly guilty because it was a birthday present for
pre_raphaelite1 and I couldn't get it done on time. But managing to get through that stage where the words are overused and have no meaning, and then turning it into a fic which makes the most innovative use of langugae out of all of mine, that makes this one special. And I'm rather proud of how I incorporated the poetry of Rochester in this, since it really wasn't working with it at first.
Most Underappreciated by the Universe: What You Want. I hate the title in this, but it was two in the morning and I had to post it before going away early the next day...Anyway, this is a Lily-centric
femgenficathon fic, and perhaps there are many people on my flist who don't like Lily or who only like to read porn (and I could hardly blame them ;)), but I remember being kind of disappointed by the feedback because I do think it is a good story, and deals with an idea, which I find really interesting (why would a young woman choose to get married and have a child in the middle of war, especially a Muggleborn woman who doesn't have to inhabit the wizarding world).
Most Fun to Write: A Short Discourse on Physical Love. My only published Harry/Draco to date. I remember there being a challenge for deflowering Harry, and starting to wonder how could Harry be deflowered by Draco in a way that wouldn't be schmoopy or overdone, and then waking up the next morning with their discussion ringing in my ears. I find Harry and Draco tend to bicker a lot in my head (unlike Remus and Sirius who tend to be silent and self-pitying), and there was much sarcasm and humour in this, as well as, you know, lots of sex.
Sexiest Fic: This one was hard to pick, but I decided on So We'll Go No More A Roving" in the end. There isn't a long, detailed sex scene in this, but rather several short things which I find still give a shock to the system when I reread this. And if the story can make the writer twitch, then it probably works. *g*
"Holy crap, that's wrong even for you" fic: Strangely, for this there was no competition. A Wand And An Audience. Tom Riddle/Minerva McGonagall, and I blame
pre_raphaelite1 for inspired me to become quite this depraved. Although considering that I consider myself to be an unabashed pornographer, it is perhaps strange that this is the worst I've been. Maybe I am actually vanilla. *ponders* So any thoughs on what daring depths of perversity you would like to see me attain would be most welcome.
Fic that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: A Brave Man Fleur/Remus. I had liked Fleur in canon and thought her portrayal shed light on the xenophobia of the wizarding world in an interesting way, but after this I had new appreciattion of her character, and of the subtle misogyny of the wizarding world as well. Also, I find it intereting that in this story I don't care much about Remus, which is rather strange and unusual. Apparently I am feminist before I am a pervert,
Hardest fic to do: This Their Desolation. I remember starting this just before HBP came out, trying to to write a Lying Low At Lupin's for
musesfool's birthday and it just wasn't going at all. I ended up giving up and doing something else for her, and then finding the remnants of this on my laptop a few months later, and thinking actually it wasn't that bad. But a two month break between parts one and two made it very difficult to find the voice again, and I remember being very frustrated by Remus in this, insisting on being so scared and passive-aggressive when I wanted him to be something else. Somehow, it did work in the end and when I reread it now I quite like it. But it was a most painful progress.
Biggest disappointment: This Boy This was very difficult to write, and I couldn't get the words make any sense or show or tell anything. I am still dissatisfied and kind of embarrassed by this, and disappointed by the fact that even though I find Remus/Regulus to be a rather interesting pairing I couldn't make this any better.
Biggest surprise: Rage Against the Dying of the Light. This one was for
sirius_loving and I had been trying to write another, still unfinished Bring Back Black story, which wasn't working at all. Then I decided to forget about that and wrote this is two days, and I am still astonished by how easily the words flowed and how well it turned out. This is still one of my favourite stories.
Most telling fic: The Days Are Bright This is by far the most painful story I have written and I remember talking to my betas about how people would cry. Remus is kicked in the face by the Werewolf Registry, and then there is much depression and illness and a terrible heatwave. I was quite unhappy at the time of writing this, and Britain was going through a particularly horrid heatwave, so my general frustration at life does come through in the story. Although interestingly enough I only realised how autobiographical it was a few weeks after finishing it. But that said, I think it also one of the best things I have written.
