So. Mpreg. Do you love it? Hate it? Can't be bothered to think about it?
I find myself curious about the phenomenon of mpreg in fandom. Some people seem to hate it with an unholy passion. Some perceive it as OMG the cutest thing eva. A plot device, a source of crackfic, an embodiment of patriarchal control system, an embodiment of feminist subversion, mostly an embodiment of bad writing?
I want to know what you think about mpreg, and most importantly, why. If you dislike it, what do you dislike about it? If you enjoy it, what do you think is good/interesting/sexy about it?
Is it the association with bad writing, silly teenagers who cannot imagine romance without babies and marriage? I used to be wary of such things until I read
eutychides's Things That Change (which is not only a devastatingly well written mpreg, but a fic so moving and memorable that after finishing reading it at three in the morning, I had to go back the next day and reread the whole thing).
Also, if I were to write an mpreg fic, would you read it? That said, I am writing one so you shall be put to the test in a few weeks. ;)

Amen!
Date: 2006-06-03 10:45 pm (UTC)Some (good and bad alike) writers get hung up on their stories having to adhere to canon precisely; therefore, any canon female that comes between the favored slash couple must be dealt with in a way that's compatible with canon. Discrediting the woman is just the easiest way.
To be fair, this happens in Snape/Hermione storiesm Harry/Hermione, and Harry/Draco stories with Ron Weasley playing the part of Teh Ebil. Instead of turning him into a slut, he's turned into a bigot, deatheater, rapist, or an extreme parody of masculine insensitivity so that Snape can seem sensitive in comparison. Just imagine how insensitive THAT is.
I've seen a somewhat similar dynamic in Snape/Lupin stories with Sirius playing the part of Teh Ebil Rapist or ParodyofInsensitivity!Sirius Or Wife(Remus)Beater!Sirius.
I wish fanfiction writers would just slap an AU or Alternate Reality label, and write their favorite ship anyway, or write a threesome with the canon female character. Really, just as long as you treat all the characters with respect by not shortchanging them of their good points, your story will still be good. It's the characters and their mythical world that are that important things to get right for me.
