Graceland!
Jan. 19th, 2014 06:29 pmLast week
liseuse persuaded me to start watching Graceland.
I am here to persuade YOU.
A) Because it's a show about FBI/DEA/other US government agency people living together in a beach house in California, which gives us beautiful shots of the sea, lots of hot people, and clever people being clever and doing things. There is a New Guy, but what we are shown is somebody learning how to do things rather than somebody being an ignorant fool. We are actively shown how he's making use of what previous knowledge he has, and this is done in a way that not only assumes the audience is intelligent, but also allows to actively see why the New Guy is clever (rather than just being told that over and over, yes Sherlock I am looking at you). Actually, we are shown everybody being clever in their different ways, but also being normal people who bicker about cleaning and drink beer and hook up with strangers in a bar. All the characters are characters rather than stereotypes, and I am sufficiently hooked by now that I am greedy for all new information about every single character. This is an intelligent drama with intelligent characterisation, and would be worth watching just for that.
B) However, there is also the fact that out of the main cast of 6, only two people are white. Minor recurring characters are diverse; this is a show that exhibits a diverse California rather than one miraculously full of only white people. And their various heritages are discussed as part of normal conversation about the world, not as heavy-handed anvils about racism.
C) The New Guy is Aaron Tveit, who played Enjolras in Les Miserables. I admit that this is what got me into the show - I have a lot of feelings about Enjolras - and it is what ahem, inspires most of the comments I've sent to
liseuse while watching. He's just really really attractive, okay? There is a scene where we see him wake up, in his underwear, and there were so many sculpted muscles on view that I had to take a break to make some noises. Um, here: http://soemily.tumblr.com/post/58218362090
But actually, everybody in this show is really really hot. AND THERE ARE MANY WAYS THESE VARIOUS HOTNESSES COULD COMBINE. So get on that, fandom. I want to see Mike shagging Johnny shagging Charlie shagging Paige, and everybody ganging up on Briggs. As it were.
