A Drabble
Fleur Delacour, 326 words.
She doesn’t mind Molly being rude to her. Ugly people are rude to her all the time and she lives with it, relishes it even since it spells out so eloquently the reasons of their dislike. But Molly tries to make trouble between her and Bill, and this she resents. It’s natural that a mother should dislike any woman who becomes involved with her son, but Molly is being foolish about it, is being tacky. Although that shouldn’t surprise her either.
Fleur isn’t a silly girl to fall in love at the drop of a hat, and she isn’t an evil temptress to lure away good men. She knows one of the reasons Molly dislikes her is because she thinks Fleur is marrying her son in order to become British. But Fleur is French, she doesn’t need to be British. Marrying a British man wouldn’t make her British. And she isn’t common, not like Molly assumes everybody is, not like Molly wants everybody to be.
She’s going to marry Bill, and it isn’t so that she can become a Weasley, for who would want that. Not even because she is in love, and she is, desperately so, with this man who is wild with others and quiet with her, makes her want to be quiet with him. Love isn’t a good enough reason to get married and Fleur is practical, she knows that there is more to it than silly declarations of want and making a show of having bagged her man. Fleur could bag any man she wanted to so there is no need for show, not that she is childish enough to want that.
But Bill reminds her that she can be something more than the most beautiful woman in the world, something more than a Triwizard champion, a talented witch, a veela. And for that, she will tolerate Molly Weasley.
And for Bill’s sake, she won’t show any smugness about it.
