What with the new arrival of [livejournal.com profile] the_kennel, I've been thinking a lot about Remus/Sirius fiction. Why we read it, why we wirite it, and what can we do for there to be more and better of it. What makes this an interesting pairing, what scenarios work for you, what makes it sexy and exciting or moving and romantic or angsty and poignant or whatever it is for you. Anyway, for my secret and lascivous purposes, a poll. Please also explain your choice in comments. *prods*

Honestly, if they're well-written, a fic set in any era has my interest, but I'd have to say the post-Hogwarts, pre-Azkaban time wins out (however slightly) simply because there's so much to explore there, so much tension and so many potential situations, so little canon. It's a lot of blank space, and that's intriguing.

I tend to be most interested in reading and writing about the two of them during OotP. Sirius holed in Grimmauld Place, lonely and miserable, worried about Harry.

Not because I have some sort of schoolboy kink, but actually because I feel more connected with younger types, and I hate too much angst and horrible grown-up real life issues spoiling my porn.

Oh, I dunno. I read all of them, but am more comfortable writing the first.

Although I do read and enjoy fics set in other eras, it's Marauder era all the way for me. I'm quite shamelessly addicted to schoolboy UST. :)

I prefer Marauf=ders-era because, while I've grown more and more to like angst because there so much well-written angst for this pairing, in the end, I still prefer fluff, and also, I have a shamelss addiction to first-time fics.

All of those eras appeal to me, but my honest-to-goodness favourite genre is fluff, and I find the best fluff to be Marauders-era as they don't have any of those nasty grown-uppy things to deal with yet :)

post-Hogwarts, pre-Azkaban because they're old enough to have a certain amount of freedom but young enough to still be foolish and for everything to mean everything. Also, there's so much potential for angst which is lovely but it seems sort of natural that they fall together here. James falls in with Lily, Peter falls in with Death Eaters at some point and well, Remus falls in with Sirius (or vice versa)

It really depends what kind of R/S I'm writing or want to read. So, no particular favourite for me, though I do most often write post-Hogwarts, pre-Azkaban. :)

Am slogging through comments-answering and appropriate levels of self-pimping so I can get back to James's letter on CQ. I've given myself the night off from remix because pretty shortly I shall be writing the "Rocks fall, everyone dies" scenario!

You?

I concur with [livejournal.com profile] absinthe_lust. I've seen lots of Marauder-era fics and lots of lying low at Lupin's fics, but what really interests me is how it all fell apart in the first place. What happened between these guys that caused each of them to suspect the other of being a traitor? It's so fascinating and never elaborated-upon in canon.

I've just spent a lot of time thinking about this. Like, really, a lot.

There's something in all of them and I'd be very sad if any one suddenly disappeared out of the fandom. It was a really close run thing for me to chose between MWPP and Pre-Azkaban, but MWPP won by a nose because of my love of getting together fics and there's more of them in MWPP. The thing I like about them both is that there is so much room for all types of fics--fluff, humour, angst and porn. Also, these stories are like the grounding for everything else that comes later. There's enough canon information to give a reasonably good framework but not so much to be restrictive--we have things like Sirius running away from home and Lily and James getting together/married which make a good starting point, but plenty of gaps left to fill in.

I find LLAL & OotP more restrictive. The LLAL period is actually pretty short (just a few weeks at most) and we know that Sirius never left the house in OotP, so there's less to play with. There is room for angst, hurt/comfort and even some happy stuff, but not so much.

Also, as a result of my OCD tendencies, I actually went back and counted all my fics by era (19 MWPP, 15 Pre-Azkaban and 4 for all post-Azkaban periods combined). I have nothing interesting to add about this, but it took me a while so I thought I'd mention it. ;)

There's just a thing about the boys being just crazy and happy and wild, since this is just about the only truly happy moment in their lives, but pre-azkaban comes second because of all of the angst possilities. :)

Lie low at Lupin's through OotP, since the lying low only actually lasts for about two or three weeks. I like them best as adults, as men who've been through the wringer and are shaped by all the crap that happened before - I fell in love with them before OotP came out, and I thought they were going to get their happily ever after, so I also adore well-written bring back Black.

Of course, I like the younger stuff, too. But my favorite era is post-PoA.

It was really, really difficult for me to pick. But Marauders-at-school has a slight edge because it offers so many things: fun highjinks, teenage lust, prank-angst, etc.

This is a bit of an aside, but I think one thing that has sustained my interest in Remus/Sirius for so long is that depending on my mood or current interest, I can read about them in any of those times and places you listed in your poll. Though JKR hasn't given us much canon, she has told us enough about Remus and Sirius at a number of crucial points in their lives, covering a range of ages and situations. With the younger generation of HP characters (and with characters in many other fandoms) canon provides us with a more limited window to work with. We can always speculate about a character's untold past or future, but fanfiction that's grounded in canon is more satisfying, at least to me.

Post-Hogwarts/pre-Azkaban, because the sex is always fast, hard, dirty, and desperate. Yum.

At this point in my life (ha) I identify more with the LLAL/OotP era R/S. The setting in OotP may be limited but there's more of an emotional landscape for me.

While I will read other eras my preference is the school days. I think it is simply because everyone is together and the days are all ahead of them. I still like some angst like dealing with "The Prank" or other conflicts but it is still not as heavy. I guess dealing with the war and also the finality of knowing the deaths of James and Lily, betrayal of Peter and arrest of Sirius are coming even make the post-Hogwats era a little hard for me. Again, I will read anthing written well but my preference is to see new interpretations of how they all got together, learned to love each other and generally kept the school in chaos. *g*
