Clever things I have done since achieving my doctorate:

- Been locked out of my house in the middle of the night. Admittedly, this was not my fault - the lock had mysteriously broken and had to be fixed by two different locksmiths the next day. Still, annoying and frustrating.

- Dropped my desk on my foot, as a result of which I have a broken toe. Well, I think it's broken/fractured, because it's swollen and hurts and I can't walk very well. Apparently, there's not much to be done about such things, so I shan't bother going to the doctor's unless it gets worse. I can't walk anyway, or afford a taxi, so the point is moot. Have taken ibuprofen and am keeping it (sort of) elevated, so hopefully it gets better. If anyone has insightful advice on how to treat a broken toe, those would be greatly appreciated.

Heh, that cheers me up at least. Thanks!

Augh! I broke a toe years ago, but I'm afraid I have no helpful advice to offer - I went to the doctor's, and got my leg put in a cast (not the toe, which still had wiggle room, but the whole leg up to over the knee) and had to hop around on crutches for a week. No idea if that's still standard procedure (I really doubt it), but if possible I'd still see a doctor if I were you. If nothing else, they'll be able to tell how how to treat it properly.

The trip to the doctor's would be difficult and painful, so I'd prefer to avoid it if possible - if it doesn't get worse. I live in a flat with stairs outside, and I have arthritis on my hands so crutches wouldn't be good.

Thanks anyway!

All I know of broken toes comes from the episode of House with Mira Sorvino, where, if I'm not mistaken, it nearly killed her. But she was in Antartica, so that might mean nothing.

Heh. I think House makes us all somewhat more paranoid about our health. ;)

1) Three cheers for Dr. Wildestranger!

2) Boo for broken toes. I broke one a few years ago and sympathize. It HURTS! Stay off it as much as you can; you can also ice it to reduce swelling. You might go to the doctor anyhow if you manage it tomorrow; even though they can't make it better they can tape it properly & make sure you haven't done serious damage. They can also give you a crutch which you can hobble around on and also smack people with if they give you any guff.

Sadly, my fucked up wrists make crutches a useless proposition. I'm thinking I'll just stay at home and send minions out for food. :)

I've broken almost all of my toes at one point or another (I used to be extremely klutzy and have only gotten mildly better). At least you dropped something on yours to break it; I broke one walking across a carpted room once.

Anyway, unless it's turned purple it's probably sprained and not broken. Either way, the only thing that doctors are going to tell you to do is be careful, avoid walking if possible, take ibprofen and keep it up. Ice is good because it will help reduce the swelling, but don't keep ice packs on it for too long. (15 on- 15 off)

Congrats on finishing your doctorate. I'm hoping to start grad school next year.

That's good - it's not purple, more like slightly paler than the rest of my foot. A sprain should heal more quickly, right? This is most helpful, thanks!

I hope you enjoy grad school - it's hard work, and what I've found is that managing the stress and anxiety that comes with it is a lot harder than the actual research, but it is worth it. And the best way to spend one's life, really. :)

Yes, it does mean that it should heal faster... usually. Sometimes sprains are worse than breaks, but I have a feeling this is a faster kind of sprain.

What's that icon from? I know the quote but I can't place it.

Crap. Sorry. That was supposed to be from Kizofdarknight. Two LJs and I didn't realize which one I was logged into.

I think it's from Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey.
