I need to produce a couple of posters next week, and as I've never done anything of the sort before, I would like your advice.

The purpose of the posters will be to advertise a meeting for a group of students, so it needs to be clear and informative, but not hugely complicated. Any recs on good free software to use? Advice on what works and what doesn't? Entertaining stories from past experience? All thoughts would be much appreciated.

Not exactly free, but if you've already got it PowerPoint does posters well.

For a very short time after uni I worked with an advertising company, and the chief graphics person always used to say: if you can't make it good make it big, and if you can't make it big make it red. Thus endeth my knowledge of posters and the like.

Don't bother trying to learn new software just to produce a couple of posters, that will just cause unnecessary difficulty and stress for you. For what you need your usual word processing programme, big letters, centred, in Helvetica or similar is absolutely fine.
